Listen to audio: A Good Day To Die, Messed Up Likes of Us
On his debut solo release, "A Good Day To
Die", Sam Llanas, previous singer for the BoDeans, sings a chilling
melody of childhood angst and trauma. The title track, a southern-tinger
tribute, tells the tale of his older brother's young suicide : (And one
morning / I woke up early / I could hear soembody crying / It was my mother
/ My broken mother / and I could tell from the look in her eye / Yes they
had found him / Pa's gun beside him / Not even 20 and we still wonder why
/ He left a note / It didn't say much / I just hope it was a good day to
die).
Even though not all the songs stick to the single topic, there is a sad feeling to the entire record.
The beats are somewhat repetitive, as if Llanas was writing the soundtrack to an old wester film; I keep waiting for a cowboy to burst in the room.
Perhaps it was necessary, maybe the album was something he simply had to release; however, if glory is what he is looking for, or at least a top ten single, he is going to have to take a different approach to his music and gain a sense of adventure.
Tour plans for Absinthe are in the works, dates will be posted as they are recieved.
