Aerosmith...Aerosmith...oh, dear sweet, Aerosmith. What happened? The band was once built on creating hard-edged rock n roll has resorted to mindless pop dribble, a switch made more than clear with their latest record, Just Push Play.
And while the genre switch can sometimes be done smoothly, it is disastrous for those who are unable to successfully pull it off. Aerosmith, unfortunately, falls into the second group. Throughout the whole record, the band ventures away from their traditional rock n roll style and enter the land of synthesizers, vibraphones, and other pop toys of destruction. It seems the band has resorted to writing songs for the early teen crowd to tap their feet to, moving away from the head-bobbing, sexually-driven rock n roll that they had become famous for. Anyone who doesnt believe me should check out their Super Bowl Halftime performance with Britney Spears and *NSYNC.
We all know theyre better than this. Joe Perry barely guitar solos on any of the songs, and the bass and drums are a mess. Toys in the Attic appealed because of their undeniable edge; Jaded, from and like this record, is simply another top 40 forgettable hit. |
