In high school, there are two kinds of rebels: the purple haired, black-nailed variety that spend their time attacking the values of society, and the baggy pants, class-cutting skaters who spend their time smoking dope and talking about their penises. As different as the two are, both are often musically inclined and very, very bitter toward the other. In a rare show of unity, however, Silverchair and Blink 182 are on tour together, recently playing a show at New York Citys Roseland Ballroom. Witnessing the event confirmed my theory that the two go together like filet mignon and toothpaste.
Silverchair, backed by a fantastic set of neon lights, were quick to grab the attention of the audience with selections from all three albums in their repertoire, including Pure Massacre, Anas Song, and Anthem for the Year 2000. Frontman Daniel Johns, decked out in typical glam fare, took stabs at the countrys current political standings, inserting the lyrics We are the youth and politicians suck my dick into a verse of Anthem for the Year 2000. After talking briefly about his views on the bible, Johns instructed the audience that, if nothing else, they should believe in rock and roll. There is no God; there is only Anas Song. Right...
As the fans of Silverchair slowly receded to the back of the room, and the intensity of the cloud of marijuana grew, Blink 182 came to the stage. Bringing a whole different kind of teenage angst to the crowd, guitarist Mark Hoppus and bassist Tom Delonge sang about other issues, like the painful desire for a blowjob, or the personal anguish one faces after inadvertantly buying bad weed. Songs like Dumpweed and Going Away To College were nothing to write home about, while Dammit and Whats My Age Again (coincidentally, both singles) both drove the crowd wild.
So, in a total of about three hours, I saw an overgrown, angry teen rant about politics, and an immature, crude teen discuss how sucky circumcision is. Couldnt I have just gone to high school? |
