THE BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE
"STRUNG OUT IN HEAVEN"
TVT RECORDS
These days, it seems that in order for a band to hit the big time, being
in the right place at the right time seems more important than talent. The
five member Brian Jonestown Massacre seems to be a band with talent that
can't seem to get into the right place. Six previous albums have recieved
little publicity and air play.
"Strung Out In Heaven," the band's major-label debut, features thirteen tracks, each of which is a successful combination of the sounds of the sixties and the nineties, with styles ranging from the Beatles to Ben Folds Five.
"Wasting Away," combines the vocal styles of Beck, the mellowness of the Doors, and the rhythmic patterns of the Who. Although Anton Newcombe, lead singer, may have a raspy voice at times, it does not distract the listener from the music.
The record is obviously derived from lost love and unfortunately does not vary much from this theme. While the musical style is cutting edge, it it is similar throughout the album. This monotony of theme and style eventually wears the listener down.
This record will not appeal to the light-hearted listeners of mainstream, but it will perk up the ears of those that are willing to try a new genre.
