As you devoted USMV followers know, we picked "Phantom Planet Is Missing" as one of the best albums of 1998. When Darren Robinson, guitarist for Phantom Planet offered to write us an article on the state of music today, we were more than happy to oblige. So we happily present:

"Darren's Thoughts on Music Today"

Rock is out and bubblegum pop is in. When you turn on MTV, what do you hear? Well, if you're lucky enough to even catch one video on MTV, it will most-likely be a rap/hip hop song, or N' Sync or the Backstreet Boys. Oh yeah, and in between all that, Hanson. What happened? Hip hop and rap are fine with me, but MTV plays that more than anything now-a-days! Rock music has disappeared! Same thing with "rock" radio stations! Now they play either ska music or swing! I repeat, WHAT HAPPENED!?

Well, it seems that bands are afraid to rock! There are bands like Korn and Limp Bizkit, who defintely "rock," yet they can definitely be classified as very hard rock. The singers of both bands are always extremely angry for the most part, and they tend to scream a bit more than sing. Nothing wrong with that, but I think it's time to have more rock bands that play rock music that is somewhere in the middle of the extremely angry/unbearably loud stuff and the wimpy bands like, well, I shouldn't name names... Let's cut out the crap and get in the rockin' bands! Down with the corporate groups! (B-Street Boys, N' SYNC...) Oops! Did I give you some names? I give them another year before they are forgotten...
