Fountains of Wayne

Utopia Parkway

(Atlantic/Scratchie)

-Joe Ramos

Fountains of Wayne have finally returned with the follow up to their brilliant 1995 self-titled debut.Utopia Parkway is a collection of fourteen brand new songs, and while Utopia isn't a masterpiece like their debut, it's far more experimental. Songs types range from keyboard-driven rockers like "Denise" to quiet ballads like "A Fine Day For A Parade." Utopia's atmospheric glow can probably be attributed to the recent addition of Jody Porter (guitar, vocals) and Brian Young (drums) to the band.

Another great aspect of Fountains of Wayne's music would be their clever lyrics. What pop band besides Fountains of Wayne would reference KoRn and Metallica on their album?

You really can't go wrong with Fountains of Wayne. It's good pop fun that's easy to get into, although like Seinfeld, being from New York only enhances the listening experience. Hey, if the Smashing Pumpkins used these guys as their opening act for their "Infinite Sadness tour," then they have to be pretty damn good. And hey, it's bound to be better than the Cultivators!
