Imagine: youre at your favorite club. The lights are flashing neon colors; a whirlwind of people is dancing below. Thick clouds of smoke rise to the platform where the citys hottest DJ is spinning record after record. The music stops for a moment, and out steps
Jimi Hendrix.
If the imagery works for you, then you can probably fathom Jeff Becks latest release, You Had It Coming. Defying comparison, Beck successfully fuses electronica and Moby-like dance beats with the alternatively weeping or screaming tones of the electric guitar. The albums opener, Earthquake, is a guitar-driven club anthem, backed by a drum track that practically lifts you out of your seat. In contrast, Blackbird evokes the sad song of a bird, accompanied by Becks guitar.
You Had It Coming is a club mix for the rockers of the new millennium reluctant to bring out Jennifer Lopez at their next party but nonetheless long for a formula to keep things moving. Like Moby, Beck makes electronica cool again. |
