Jim Taino may play the blues, but he isnt your run-of-the-mill blues musician. This became apparent to me after seeing this man and his band, The Blueflames, perform at the Turning Point in Piermont, New York.
Taino has been rocking the blues boat since 1987, impressing audiences with his mix of Delta blues and Latin jazz. When I got to the venue, the show had just got underway and the band was glowing with enthusiasm. They started off with a little country-blues and then moved into a blues rhythm reminiscent of B.B. Kings early work.
They then morphed the infamous hit by Santana, Black Magic Woman, with an improvised guitar solo by Mr. Taino. From then on, the show got even better, with the band taking a small break and then quickly returning to some power blues. They let loose with great guitar solos flowing with soul and bass lines with some bite.
By the time the show ended, everyones jaws had hit the floor. Even if you arent a blues or Latin jazz fan, remember the name Taino. |
