Fans were anxious for a night of rock and roll, lining up as early as 1 p.m. to get a choice spot on the general admission floor. Once the gates opened and everyone settled in, however, the venue felt surprisingly empty. Though the floor was full, the seating sections were more or less deserted. Energy was low, and Ozma’s relatively mediocre set did little to stir up excitement.

Fans continued to trickle in as Saves The Day, the second support act, took the stage for their first hometown arena performance, suffusing their songs with passion and energy. Chris Conley took frequent breaks to speak to the crowd, lending a feeling of intimacy to the 22,000-seat venue. By the end of the set, the room teemed with the energy and excitement of 10,000 finally-invigorated fans.

After a thirty-minute intermission with startlingly bad music blaring through the PA system, Weezer took the stage, prompting cheers and screams from fans as they launched into “Island in the Sun,” their current single. Upon finishing, frontman Rivers Cuomo enigmatically said, “Here’s some cheez-wiz” before immediately starting “In The Garage,” from their self-titled debut. Though the music is incredible live, the experience is weakened by the nearly nonexistent connection between the band and audience. Between every song, Rivers predictably blurted out some sort of nonsensical comment (ranging from the aforementioned “cheez-wiz” to “who’s my bitch”) before going straight into the next song. And instead of being ironic or cute, it becomes annoying – fast. As a result, the live show offers nothing the record doesn’t.
